
Why we put our bathroom lamps through “damp-heat” torture
Let’s be honest: bathrooms are a nightmare for electronics. You’ve got steam everywhere, constant swings in temperature, and the occasional stray water droplet landing exactly where it shouldn’t. If a heating lamp isn’t built for that chaos, it’s toast. The seal leaks, the filament ruins, and the whole thing burns out in a few weeks. Nobody wants to deal with that.
How we try to break them
We don’t just “test” these lamps. We basically put them through a boot camp of accelerated aging. We shove our infrared units into high-humidity chambers, crank up the heat, and leave them there for hundreds of hours. It’s a shortcut to simulate years of real-world bathroom use. We’re hunting for that one tiny gap—a microscopic leak in the quartz or a weak spot in the terminals—where moisture manages to sneak in. Here’s the thing: water vapor is the natural enemy of the halogen cycle. If even a tiny bit of moisture gets past the connector, the pressure inside shifts and the filament snaps. Simple as that.
What we’re actually looking for
When we run these tests, we’re obsessing over three things: First, theseals. We need to know the glass-to-metal bond stays tight even when the lamp is heating up and cooling down over and over. Then there’s thecoating. There’s nothing worse than a protective layer that starts peeling or flaking just because it got hit by a bit of steam. And finally, theconnectors. We make sure they don’t oxidize. If they rust or corrode, you get voltage drops and the contact points start overheating. Not a good look.
The balancing act
It sounds easy—just seal it tighter, right? Well, not quite. If we make the seals too tight, we can actually trap gases inside, which messes with how the heat spreads. It’s a bit of a tug-of-war between making it totally waterproof and making sure it actually puts out the best infrared heat possible. We usually solve this by tweaking the thickness of the quartz walls. At the end of the day, a lamp can look perfect on a factory bench and still fail the moment someone turns on a hot shower. We put them through the ringer now so you don’t have to deal with a broken lamp later.
