
Fixing Those Annoying Dead Zones in Glass Annealing
If you’ve ever worked with complex glassware—think weirdly shaped flasks or custom lab pieces—you know the nightmare of internal stress. You pull a piece out of the kiln, and crack. Usually, it’s because your kiln has “dead zones.” These are those stubborn cold spots where the heat just doesn’t reach. When one part of your glass cools faster than the rest, the whole thing wants to rip itself apart. The fix? Stop relying solely on old-school resistive heating. We’ve found that adding targeted infrared (IR) lamp arrays is the way to go.
Why IR Actually Works
Here’s the thing: standard convection heating is lazy. It struggles to get into recessed areas or those tight, narrow necks. IR is different. It moves in straight lines and hits the glass surface directly. If you set up shortwave or medium-wave lamps at different angles, you can basically bathe the workpiece in heat from every side. No more guessing if the corners of the kiln are actually hot enough.
Getting the Setup Right
You can’t just throw any lamp in there. You’ve got to match the wattage and length to the actual size of your furnace. High-wattage quartz lamps are your best bet here because they get you to that annealing point fast. And a pro tip:stagger your layout. If you line them up perfectly, you get “shadowing”—where one part of the glass blocks the heat from hitting the other side. Staggering them keeps the heat flowing everywhere. But be careful with the power. If you blast a tiny area with too much juice, you’ll get localized overheating. That leads to thermal shock, and you’re right back to square one with a broken piece of glass. You’ll want to dial in your PID controller so the temperature drops in a nice, smooth line.
The Trade-offs
The best part about IR lamps? They’re instant. You get way more control over your cooling curve than you ever would with heavy ceramic heaters. It feels much more responsive. But there’s a catch. These lamps are fragile. They don’t love vibration or the constant expansion and contraction of heating and cooling. If you just bolt them down tight, they’ll snap. You need mounting brackets that give the quartz envelope some room to breathe. Give them a little wiggle room for thermal expansion, or you’ll be replacing bulbs way more often than you’d like.
