
Stopping Those Annoying Glass Chips with IR Preheating
If you’ve ever cut marine-grade glass, you know the frustration of corner breakouts. You do everything right, but you still end up with those jagged chips that ruin a piece. It happens because the glass is basically fighting you—internal stresses are pushing back against the cutting wheel. The trick we use to stop this is infrared (IR) preheating. Basically, we warm up the material before the blade ever touches it.
Why the heat helps
Glass doesn’t move heat around very well. When it’s cold, the fracture line likes to wander, which is how you get those messy edges and a pile of scrap you can’t use. By hitting the cutting line with shortwave infrared heat, we relax the glass. It lowers the internal tension and makes the material a bit more “cooperative.” When you finally make the break, it’s clean. It follows the path you actually wanted, which means way less grinding and polishing during the edging stage.
Getting the setup right
We usually mount high-density quartz IR lamps right above the cutting bed. The key here is speed. The lamps have to heat up fast enough to keep up with the CNC table, or you’re just wasting electricity. But you can’t just crank the heat to the max. If it’s too cold, the chips stay. If it’s too hot, you’re just creating new thermal stresses. It’s a balancing act between the wattage and how far the lamps are from the glass. We use zoned controls because a thick slab of marine glass needs a longer “soak” in the heat than a thin piece of architectural glass.
The real-world headaches
Now, let’s be honest: IR preheating isn’t a magic wand. It won’t fix a dull cutting wheel. If your tools are shot, your edges will be shot too, regardless of the temperature. And then there’s the heat. These lamps put out a massive amount of it. I’ve seen CNC gantry fans give up the ghost because the IR array was sitting too close. If you don’t have a serious ventilation plan, you’re probably going to fry your electronics. Just make sure your shop can breathe, and you’ll be in good shape.
