
The Struggle with Cold Spots in Wide-Format Low-E Preheating
If you’re preheating wide-format Low-E glass, you know the headache of cold spots. It’s frustrating. You’ve got a massive piece of glass moving down a conveyor, but standard lamps just aren’t long enough to cover the whole thing. When you’re dealing with widths over 3 meters, you can’t just buy something off a shelf. That’s why we build continuous medium-wave quartz heating units. The Headache of Ultra-Long Tubes
Here’s the thing: when you scale a quartz tube up to 3 meters or more, physics starts working against you. Voltage drop becomes a real pain. If you just wire a long tube at low voltage, you’ll end up with a mess—blazing hot at the ends and lukewarm in the middle. To fix that, we spend a lot of time obsessing over the wattage-per-centimeter ratio. We tweak the voltage until that filament glows perfectly steady from one end to the other. We stick with medium-wave infrared for this. It sinks into the glass better than short-wave, which means your Low-E coating actually sticks without you having to worry about scorching the edges.
The Nitty-Gritty on Materials
We use high-purity fused quartz because it can handle the way a 3-meter span expands when it gets hot. But be careful. These long tubes are fragile. If your mounting brackets are even a tiny bit off, the tubes can bow or just snap. We always suggest floating mounts. It gives the quartz room to breathe, expanding and contracting naturally without breaking. And a heads-up on your power: a 3-meter array is a power hog. If you’re running these in parallel, make sure your electrical panel can handle the load. Otherwise, you’re going to be tripping breakers the second you try to ramp up.
Making it Work on the Line
These units slide right into your preheating zone to get the glass to the right temperature before the coating hits. The goal is a flat, even thermal profile across the whole sheet. Just watch your airflow. If your cooling fans are too aggressive, you’re basically fighting your own heater. But if they’re too weak? The quartz tubes will overheat and burn out way too fast. It’s all about that balance. Get the airflow and heat output synced up, and your tubes will last a lot longer.
