
Stopping Glass from Cracking with Fast IR Control
Let’s be honest: the move from forming to annealing is where the real nightmares happen in glassware production. It’s where most of your scrap comes from. If you just blast glass with a steady wall of heat, you’re basically asking for thermal shock. That’s why we use shortwave infrared (IR) systems with fast power modulation. Instead of a blunt instrument, it’s more like a dimmer switch that works in milliseconds. You can ramp the heat up or down instantly, which keeps the vessel from shattering while it’s tempering. Why this actually works Shortwave IR lamps don’t have much “thermal mass.” In plain English? They don’t take forever to warm up like those old resistive coils do. They hit full power almost the second you flip the switch. We hook these up to SCR power controllers so you can tweak the wattage on the fly. The moment a piece of glass hits a certain temperature, you can drop the power. This stops the surface from getting scorched while the core of the glass is still catching up. The gear and the gotchas We usually go with high-density quartz halogen tubes. These are great because the energy actually sinks into the glass rather than just heating up the air around it. Just a heads-up: make sure your wiring and connectors are beefy enough. Rapid switching creates current spikes, and you don’t want your hardware frying. But there’s a catch. These lamps are incredibly intense. If your conveyor belt stutters or a cooling fan quits, you’re going to burn the glass or even melt your fixtures. You’ve got to make sure your cooling system can handle the sheer amount of heat soaking around the lamp housing. Getting it right on the floor When you’re actually setting this up on your line, pay close attention to the gap between the lamp and the glass. Too close? You’ll get hot spots. Too far? You lose that punchy shortwave efficiency. Once you’ve found that sweet spot, use the power modulation to create a smooth, gradual heat curve. It gets rid of those tension points that lead to a loud pop and a pile of shards on the floor.
